The ability to get around is a major aspect of independent living.  Whether it’s by car, public transport, or just walking, the freedom to go where we want and when we want is something we often take for granted. 

How long is it safe to drive?

Of all the transport options driving a car is the most demanding. There are many skills involved in driving and HD affects these skills to a point where driving is no longer safe.  It is understandable that this represents a major loss for a person with HD. 

Having HD does not disqualify anyone from driving but regular driving assessments will monitor whether or not someone is safe to continue driving.

Other transport options?

For those who can no longer drive it does not mean that independent travel is no longer an option.  There are many options available that allow people to use various forms of public transport.
