Staying well PDF Print E-mail

Anyone who has been affected by Huntington’s Disease, either directly or indirectly, can forget about the importance of maintaining balance in their life. Some points to remember are:

Exercise

  • Physical and mental activity can slow down the onset of symptoms, especially during adolescence when it can delay symptoms by 5 years.
  • Walk 30 minutes a day. This can be a de-stressor and a time for reflection.

Relaxation

  • Listen to a relaxation tape each day. This can be done lying on your bed or sitting in a comfortable chair. Tapes can be purchased at bookstores, obtained at various libraries, or found by searching for “relaxation tapes” on the internet.
  • Practice meditation. Get started by searching for “relaxation meditation” on the internet.
  • Relaxing bath, with a scented candle and soft music.
  • Soothing self talk: “I am going to get through this.”
  • Arrange to have respite if you are a Carer. Ask for help. (link to Accommodation /respite care)

Other Useful Tips

  • Develop structure and consistency in your day and night, such as going to bed around the same time each night, and eating at scheduled meal times. Living our day within a constructed framework helps make us feel in control of our circumstances.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Take time for yourself. Nurture yourself by doing something you enjoy. Have coffee with a friend. Plan ahead. If you don’t plan it then someone else will come first.
  • Arrange to have counseling to process feelings. This can be either individual counseling or by attending a Carers Support Group at Huntington’s Victoria. Also you can find support on the Online Forum
